"...an unusual electro-mechanical keyboard instrument...
..restricted to the recording studio and a few very rich or very daft bands."

The use of cool or weird sound effects by the Pumpkins includes this crazy instrument, the mellotron. It's been around since the sixties, and is very rare and hard to find (hence the "very rich or daft bands" reference above). As seen on vieuphoria, the mellotron produces orchestral sounds (not screaming voices. sorry). Some notable examples of it's use in Smashing Pumpkins music: "Spaceboy", "Tear", "The Last Song" and "Infinite Sadness." There are others, I just can't think of them at the moment...

Contrary to what some people believe, there is NO mellotron used on the songs "Disarm" and "Luna", and only the demo version of "Tonight Tonight" actually used mellotron. Also some people have asked me to write out piano scores for mellotron parts; this is a reasonable request but I think you'd be better off just looking at a good 'ole guitar tab to provide you with chords. Most mellotron parts are chords anyway.
